dress code in the Virgin Islands

One of the greatest advantage to be on vacation in the Caribbean is clothing. Casual is the norm. That's what you will see around St. Thomas. All you need is a shirt, a short pant, and a pair of casual shoes for summer or spring when in town shopping for jewelry or souvenirs.

Note: A person once said that after diner when everyone is getting ready to leave, they all look like they were about to head to the golf course because everyone whore a collar shirt and short pants.

After a couple hours on the beach, you may feel the need to just hop on a taxi or your rental for a quick trip to a grocery store or any other store for that matter. And there you are in your swim suit in the middle of town browsing around, that is a major NO-NO! It is highly discouraged to shop around in stores in your swim suit or bikini gear. It is considered very bad taste. Whenever you leave the beach or the pool, make sure are in your casual comfortable wear.

During the day, you should wear a short, tank tops, t-shirt, and sun dresses for the ladies. In the evening, dress shorts will do for ladies again, and for the men, a polo shirt or anything similar with a collar but no ties. As for the night life, an appropriate attire would be jeans, dress shores, long sleeved shirt or even a light jacket, depending on the time of the year. Jean pants or similar long pants are recommended if you are susceptible to mosquito bites.
